plastic

The straws, calimetes or straws are not the only ones. Let's learn about plastic.

Large amounts of solid waste are produced daily, only in Mexico around one kilogram per day per inhabitant, that is, approximately 100 thousand tons of waste per day.

According to SEMARNAT, cities with more than one million inhabitants produce 45% of all the garbage in Mexico, which is usually collected by trucks that take it to landfills, but much of that garbage ends up in open dumps. and thus causes severe damage to health and the environment, it also encourages the proliferation of harmful fauna such as rats, flies and mosquitoes, along with fungi and bacteria that become sources of infection causing gastrointestinal, respiratory and fungal diseases.

But what about plastic?

According to a study by the Ellen McArthur Foundation published in the World Economic Forum in Davos, the excessive consumption of plastic will lead to more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.

That is the main reason why the consumption of plastic must reconsider and go from a linear model to a circular one where reuse and recycling of this material are the axes of it. The plastic reuse process begins at home with the separation of this and other waste to achieve its rapid identification and collection to proceed with its proper deposition.

Right now, there are 5 large plastic floating islands on the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. These islands were concentrating the debris carried by the marine currents to those areas where the plastic floats and catches fish of all sizes.

Some of that plastic breaks down into small particles called microplastics, which are consumed by marine animals, and pass to the food chain with effects that are still being analyzed, but are not favorable until what has been concluded.

Where does it come from and how does it reach the sea?

Every day we use endless containers, from plastic or metal containers and jars to glass bottles and jars, the indiscriminate use of which generates a great environmental impact that has led institutions such as SAGARPA and SEMARNAT to promote the reduction of their use and the collection of empty containers.

The straw is not the only marine enemy. Plastic is a highly resistant and malleable material, which can be truly useful in many sectors of the home, office, schools and other daily uses.

The big problem with this material is that despite its benefits, we use it as a use and waste material, when it could be reused dozens of times and even thus reduce energy consumption, for example.

All of this plastic when it is not properly disposed of in separate containers, or when people dump garbage into streams and rivers; the currents sooner or later end up creeping into the sea where the effects last for hundreds of years.

Consume responsibly and act to repair the damage!

The human being is distinguished from the other species by creativity. While we have created this big problem, there are great inventors and socially responsible companies that are changing the trend. I want to name two of them:

  1. The Ocean Cleanup. An initiative through trawl buoys that only one Bojan Slat, a young Danish man of barely 18 years of age, has gained the support of large corporations that are financing what was a project to make it a reality at the beginning of 2020, starting with cleaning up millions of tons of floating plastic on the west coast of the United States, and expanding coverage to rivers in other countries.
  2. Kathmandu. Like other socially responsible companies, this brand of hiking equipment has launched a line of backpacks and accessories based on recovered plastic bottles.

Think twice before discarding a plastic, if you have to buy a plastic container try to contain the legend PET so it can be recycled. Remember that a large percentage of highly harmful waste ends up damaging fauna and our ecosystems. We are counting on you!
