Currently in Mexico 30% of the food produced in the country is lost, which represents close to 10 million tons per year; large amounts of edible products are wasted every day that could be consumed or put to another use.

In the country, 86 thousand 343 tons of garbage are collected daily, that is, 770 grams per person, of which 52.4% are organic waste that comes from homes, shops, shopping centers, self-service stores, among others.

Food waste is a serious problem that occurs in different countries, mainly industrialized ones, where, in most cases, it is caused by both traders and consumers who throw perfectly edible food in the trash.

For this reason, one of the main objectives for some institutions in Mexico is to reduce and minimize the loss of products that are in good condition such as: fruits, vegetables, legumes and some animal products. While counting everything that is thrown away, we could feed the world's low-income people six times.

There are various solutions to gradually eradicate this problem, first of all it is important to promote food donations that come from establishments such as restaurants, markets and some homes to those who need them (vulnerable and low-income people). On the other hand, reusing the "leftovers" in other dishes helps to promote the recycling of these products and avoid excessive consumption of food.

In addition, organic waste can be converted into renewable energy through a process called biorefinery, which consists of transforming fruit peels, waste and other natural residues into bio-fuels like hydrogen that does not cause negative effects on the planet.

There are concrete actions that you can do from home:

Place a small container next to your sink and keep aside the peels of the vegetables you peel, the

erase unprocessed coffee, eggs and organic waste and compost

in your garden.

The food that goes bad, the boots. Try to keep your fridge clean at the end of the month by maximizing food consumption and reducing waste.

Separate waste so that it can be recycled at a collection center.

Do not buy excess food It is necessary to give an appropriate use to food to generate more benefits, since with these efficiency measures it is possible to improve people's quality of life, the economy and the use of natural resources worldwide.

Do not throw food away just for its appearance if it is in good condition.

Search online for institutions like food Bank in Mexico, and help those who need it most by donating the food that is left over.
