Water saving tips. Third part.

Water is one of the most valuable natural resources on the planet, occupying almost three-quarters of the Earth's surface, although only 3% is sweet. Life arose from water and without it no living being could exist. .

  • Use soaps and shampoos biodegradable for personal and house hygiene. Less water is needed to rinse and they do not contain phosphates that pollute the water. Read the labels and avoid buying products that contain formaldehyde and ethanol, because they are very dangerous to health and harm the entire chain of living beings.
  • Carve very dirty parts by hand to avoid having to re-wash clothes.
  • Run the washing machine only with full loads to avoid wasting water, or choose a washing machine that uses less water.
  • Do not abuse the water while you are washing something. Use a brush, rag or scouring pad to remove grime when washing - don't expect the force of the water alone to do the job.

In patio and garden

  • Covering the garden soil with leaves or leafy soil will allow for better moisture retention.
  • Water only when necessary, do it very early or after the sun goes down to prevent the sun from evaporating the water.
  • Select plants native to the area where you live, because they are better adapted to the climate of the place and will require less water.
  • If you water with sprinklers, place them in such a way that you do not water parts that are paved or that do not need it.
  • In the dry season, cut the grass but do not sweep it to avoid evaporation.
  • Do not use artificial fertilizers for your grass, the longer it grows, the more water it needs. In general, do not use artificial fertilizers because they poison the land and water and kill the species that live there like the Earthworms how useful they are for your flowers and fruits.
  • Take advantage of cut grass and leaves to produce compost and thus have a natural fertilizer that does not pollute.
  • Do not cut the grass too flush, the convenient height is between 5 and 8 cm, so the roots remain healthy and moisture is retained.
  • In the dry season, do not waste water on the grass that has turned yellow, it is not that it is dead or has dried up but that it is inactive and will revive when the rainy season arrives.
  • If you use biodegradable soaps you can take advantage of the water that comes out of the washing machine to water your plants.

  • Many of us consider it normal to have a toilet with water in our house and we do not think that this piece of furniture causes a real waste of this liquid, especially because it is drinking water that becomes unusable. To avoid using water that someone else might need to drink in the toilet, we have two options: either reuse the water or replace our toilet with a dry bathroom.

Water reuse

  • When we reuse water, we are showing solidarity with those people who have less than we do. Another advantage of this system is that by using soapy water, cleaning the toilet is much easier.
  • Water consumption without gray water reuse system in one year: 54.750 liters per person. Water consumption with gray water reuse system in one year: 30.112 liters.
  • Another way to reuse the water is by using the water to irrigate the garden plants. The most efficient way is achieved if we make some simple adjustments in the installation of the house, as shown in the following image.
  • You can also build a gray water filter in your house and thus avoid the contamination of streets and ravines, you will have an evergreen patio and the satisfaction of knowing that you are protecting the health of your family.

Dry bath

  • A family of five that uses a toilet with water contaminates more than 150 thousand liters of water by transporting about 250 liters of excrement in a year.
  • The dry ecological toilets produce about 500 liters of compost and 5 liters of fertilizer, by transforming the excrement and urine of a family in a year.

Rainwater harvesting

  • Have you thought about capturing some rainwater? It is easy and we would take advantage of a lot of the water that is lost through the drainage. Also, you would not have to pay for the water you consume!

You CAN make a difference! If you manage to save at least 100 liters of water a year, multiply that effect by all the people who live, not only Mexico City, Caracas, Asunción, Buenos Aires and the other capitals of our cities ... It would be billions of liters per year. YES you can, and we can start drop by drop! Visit www.agua.org.mx
