Between strings and wind: music as balance of the soul

Written by:

Achieving balance between internal and external is always a tireless search.

There are many ways in which human beings seek, on the one hand, to improve ourselves, and on the other hand, to be in harmony both internally and with the environment that surrounds us.

Achieving the balance between the internal and the external is always a tireless pursuit. For us, it is not enough to be healthy and eat well, or to be responsible with the environment; but also to feed our soul in search of raising ourselves as sentient beings, to something that we cannot see, but that we know that somewhere, with whatever name we want to call it, from any philosophy or religion, it is in a corner of our spirit.

Music is one of those ways we connect to each other, often without words. Like the look of the loved one. We do not need to speak to know and feel the other.

On the occasion of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Palacio de Bellas Artes de México, I had the privilege of attending the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Pinchas Zucherman, thanks to the invitation of Internations, a group of expatriates in Mexico seeking to connect us and make us feel at home, even when we come from other countries.

There are no words to describe this almost mystical experience that I lived in the Palacio de Bellas Artes, however I feel the obligation to you, our fans, to try my best to convey to you what was a unique experience, where the senses are lost between the ropes. and wind.

Entering the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City is quite a visual experience. Vaulted ceilings full of frescoes, marble everywhere, air of culture in every corner. The elevators are pieces of ancient art that bring us memories of black and white movies, of as we go up in it, we go back to a different time and space, to a dimension where we breathe deeply and everyday life disappears.

Once settled in our seats, the eyes open to the magnificence of the theater, the balconies detach from the walls and seem to want to invade the stalls, the seats facing the stage seem to want to throw you in the middle of what will be a feast to the senses .

Like a procession, the musicians begin to parade in gala to the stage. The men with avocado frocks, the women in black clothes according to the occasion. Instruments in hand; oboes, cellos, flutes, violins, among others make their appearance. The anxiety of knowing what's coming goes “In Crescendo” as the musicians sit down and begin to tune.

Within minutes, the director. Pinchas Zuckerman, who for this neophyte of classical music was a stranger, makes his appearance. The musicians with their silence and attitude bow as in a gesture of respect and deep admiration. The Director raises his hands, and the baton rises above the air.

La Overture of The Creatures of Prometheus.

Suddenly the ears twitch. The vibrations of the instruments make the theater rumble with perfect acoustics. My ears deceive me, and if I close my eyes I think I am in the middle of the Orchestra. Violins and Cellos match perfect harmony. My eyes enjoy a visual feast seeing how with perfect coordination, the arches move almost perfectly. Only the occasional musician moves his body as if possessed by the score he plays. The others continue to debate between looking at the director or the score.

The flutes contrast but complement this allusion to the senses. The music is no longer heard, it is felt. My brain asks me to close my eyes for a while, and sink into my seat. As I do, my ears tune, my chest jumps with the vibration of the sounds, and I feel like I'm somewhere else. The conductor with his baton has taken over all of us, and little by little we surrender our will, to the movement of his wrist and the chords of the musicians.

Once this first part is finished. The audience explodes in applause. It is not only the impeccable execution of the musicians, but the gratitude for having raised our spirits to a height that we do not feel on a daily basis.

Two assistants take away the red platform on which the director was just a minute ago receiving three rounds of applause. What does the next piece hold for us?

Surprisingly, Pinchas Zucherman appears again at the center. This time with a violin in hand!

All eyes to the center, those of us who had no idea of his profile began to hear how a conductor can lead an orchestra not only with a baton, but with a violin.

Fingers galloping, he shoots himself over the ropes, we can't keep up with him with our eyes, the music comes out quickly and deliciously. Virtuous, is the adjective, there is no other. Our eyes this time cannot be closed, we are perplexed by the performance and the music on the other side of a violinist conductor who has taken us by surprise and has made the stage his own.

The musicians are at his mercy, the violin is the baton, the baton is pure music that rules the stage.

We do not stop clapping. The violinist conductor enters and leaves the stage almost embarrassed. We don't let it go. Bravo! Over and over again.

The last piece, Symphony number seven in "A" majorAfter the intermission, it leaves us no less satisfied than the first two dishes of the night.

Our soul is higher than our bodies, music has ripped us from our seats, and our senses are out of the flesh. We are in harmony with each other in the audience, everything mundane has disappeared for almost two hours.

We feel in balance with everything that surrounds us. What peace music has given us! Definitely the one who said that music is food for the soul, could not find a better way to express it.

Talking about music to you in this space is not leaving the editorial line of the magazine. On the contrary, it is one more element of how by different means we can nurture and grow as human beings. Finding balance in your body is nothing if your soul is disturbed by the day to day, practice Mindfulness or any other activity that gives you that longed for inner peace.

We invite you to visit the theaters of Fine Arts in each of their countries once possible. Surrender to music and find new ways to achieve your balance. Your soul is part of your body, feed it too.
