Excesses are bad. What began as a remedy for stomach upset dozens of years ago, today has become popular as an almost essential drink in the diet of Latin American countries in an irrational way, leading to high rates of diabetes and obesity.

Soft drinks are not bad per se, however, when they are consumed in excess and accompanied by food and snacks that in themselves contain carbohydrates that the body transforms into glucose, these produce an alteration of your metabolic processes.

The sugar from corn syrup that is used to sweeten soft drinks is not only the problem because of its quantity, which is equivalent to 17 tablespoons per container of sugar, but also comes from high fructose corn syrup, which in its majority is from genetically modified corn which cannot be metabolized by the body in an optimal way. This inappropriate metabolization not only causes the life of your cells to be shortened over time, but their quality deteriorates; In other words, they favor the appearance of degenerative diseases such as cancer, or that cells do not process insulin properly and diabetes appears on stage, as well as being the cause of obesity, which is one of the major public health concerns in our country.

Another element to consider, especially if you frequently buy soft drinks for your children, is the caffeine content in them. Caffeine in excessive consumption causes alterations to your nervous system. In small quantities it can keep you alert like the Green Tea or a good organic coffee, but in exaggerated amounts, it can cause anything from insomnia to irritability.

Have you not seen the effect of giving your children several sodas in a row? Don't you see how they almost walk on the roofs?

Fructose is a sugar that is present in moderate amounts in fruits and vegetables in greater or lesser concentration; but it is the processed foods that, due to this high amount of fructose, cause health problems. Likewise, the body becomes addicted to those amounts of sugar at the same time that a smoker needs nicotine.

Everything in excess is harmful, to say that sodas are diabolical is to tend to exaggeration and to be very simplistic. A good soda on a hot day is not bad, what is bad is consuming it indiscriminately along with snacks, sweets, and other foods continuously in the diet.

The reality is that your health is in your hands and in the awareness of consuming healthy food and maintaining a non-sedentary lifestyle.
