Beware: Margarine vs. Butter

Written by:

Margarine has trans fats that are harmful to the heart.

Hydrogenation is the key word that fundamentally distinguishes them, and derived from this process, margarine has trans fats that are harmful to the heart. But like everything, excess is always bad, butter brings its own too.

Much is said about whether butter is better over margarine, and there is a reason behind it. Margarine is obtained from a hydrogenation process, by which hydrogen is injected into the mixture to obtain its consistency, and because of this process, its fats degenerate into trans fats that are extremely harmful to the body, raising bad cholesterol and decreasing the good.

Butter is generally of animal origin, made from the Cow milk, sheep or goats generally.

Margarine, on the other hand, is obtained by eliminating excess water through other processes of centrifugation and pasteurization, until we obtain the consistency that we like so much to spread on a slice of hot bread. From this process, butter retains its vitamins A, D, and E; as well as its minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and magnesium; and especially proteins.

In the case of margarine, only if vitamins are added later, will you find the read the label that says “Enriched with Vitamins.”

Both have a good number of calories, although margarine a bit more. So if you consume them in excess, do not be surprised if you suffer from overweight and cholesterol problems in general.

Everything in excess is bad, so if you delight in the taste of butter in your food, do so in moderation.

In our recipes, we do not suggest the use of margarine. You will always find that the ingredients we suggest are as natural as possible, processed as little as possible. And margarine as a substitute for butter is something we don't recommend.
