Did you know that about 80% of our knowledge comes from vision? [1]

Frequent breaks, correct hygiene, balanced diet and high protection against UV rays can make the difference to have our eyes healthy.

Has it ever happened to you that, after spending a long time in front of the computer, your eyes no longer focus in the same way? Have you ever wondered what happens to our eyes when they receive direct sunlight? Has it been difficult for you to recognize a person who greets you from afar? Vision is an essential phenomenon for the human being, through it we understand the world around us, we interact and receive information. However, due to our diverse and hectic lifestyles, full of work, social or family responsibilities, we may not take proper care of it.

To support you in this mission, we share five situations where you can take care of your eyes in different areas of your life.[2][3][4]

Give yourself a break of the compu. Eye fatigue.

Whether for work, school or simply for entertainment, surely you spend hours in front of your cell phone, tablet or computer. Being looking at the screen of any electronic device for a long period makes us develop Digital Visual Fatigue, which means that our eyes are tired and dry, and this causes our vision to become blurry and can even lead to headaches. To avoid this, we can implement the following actions:

  • Lower the brightness: We can find a suitable brightness level for our screens so that our eyes are not hurt as much by prolonged exposure to light and at the same time see clearly what we need.
  • Neither very close nor very direct: By this we mean having a suitable distance and angles between the screen and our eyes, so that we will not receive the light directly; otherwise, we will cause our eyes to hurt more and in less time.
  • 20/20/20 Rule: This is a rule that you should not forget from now on: every 20 minutes turn to see an object 20 feet away (6 meters) for 20 seconds. In this way we will give small breaks in our eyes so that they can move and activate.

Unlike what we used to believe, this screen exposure does not have a relationship Unlike what we used to believe, this screen exposure does not have a direct relationship with the development of refractive errors such as myopia or astigmatism, but it can generate a lot of dryness and fatigue, thanks to the fact that we have our gaze fixed and we stop blinking.[5]

Sometimes you have to be selfish

Many times at work, school or among our friends we tend to borrow things, it is very common, but when it comes to personal products, we must avoid it. For example, letting someone else use your makeupSuch as mascara, eyeliners, and eyeshadow can be risky as we do not know if the other person has an infection and it can easily spread through shared use. In fact, as soon as they detect an eye infection, even your own, it is best to get rid of your current makeup and get a new one to eliminate the source of infection.

What can I do if I am a contact lens user?

How many times have we not heard that all contact lenses irritate or cause discomfort in the eyes? This happens only when you are not a candidate to use them or because you do not have the correct care. Hygiene is everything when it comes to contact lenses: Wash your hands before and after inserting them; if they are to be replaced monthly, use the appropriate solution to clean, disinfect and hydrate them; do not use them more than one day in a row; and do not mix the solution with another from another brand. There are contact lenses that can be more "flexible" in care than others; for example, those of daily replacement, with which you should not worry about cleaning or disinfecting, since we use new ones every day. Always consult with an eye health specialist about which ones best suit your needs.

From the mouth to our eyes: Foods to improve your eyesight

Just as there are foods that help us strengthen bones, hair or even our skin, there are also foods to keep our eyes healthy. Here we present four foods, in addition to carrots, that will surely help you and that should be part of your diet:

Green leafy vegetables. These vegetables, like kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, among others, are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients that could decrease the risk of developing retinal damage and even cataracts.

Salmon. A diet rich in Omega-3 considerably reduces the risk of developing eye diseases such as damage to the retina. These fatty acids are found in other cold-water fish like tuna and sardines.

Citrus. They are fruits that we know are rich in vitamin C, which in addition to helping us strengthen our immune system, is a fundamental antioxidant for eye health, as it helps prevent and delay the development of cataracts and age-related diseases. The peach, the red pepper, the tomato and strawberry can have similar effects.

Legumes of all kinds. Beans, lima beans and peanuts They contain zinc, a mineral that helps protect the eyes from light. Other foods such as oysters, lean red meat, poultry, and fortified cereals contain it as well.

Your skin, but also your eyes

Long-term exposure to sunlight can have a harmful effect on our health, but it can also lead to eye diseases like cataracts, retinal degeneration, and even cancer. In addition, the reflection of the Sun in the water can cause redness, blurred vision, sensitivity, among other things. This is why approved sunglasses go beyond a fashion accessory:

It is advisable to use them for sun protection, as well as other skin protection products.

Check if your sunglasses that you use are really functional, since even if the lens is very dark, you should make sure they have filter 99% -100% UV; Usually this information can be found in the small manual that comes with your glasses.

Ideally, try to make these large to prevent the sun's rays from filtering excessively around the edges.
