In this summer, protect your family from mosquito diseases

  • According to the Ministry of Health, in Mexico the main diseases caused by mosquitoes are Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya.
  • During 2022, more than three thousand cases of Dengue have been detected, mainly in the State of Mexico, Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca
  • The person who contracts Zika can receive a disability of up to seven days, and six months for Chikungunya

Summer is ideal for enjoying the outdoors, but it is also the time of year when humidity and rain create optimal conditions for the proliferation of mosquitoes. Therefore, depending on where we live, we can be more or less exposed to their bites, which can be the cause of some diseases such as Dengue, Zika and/or Chikungunya.

In Mexico, mosquito-borne diseases are a growing health threat. According to data from the Ministry of Health, until the last week of August 2022, 3,417 confirmed cases of Dengue had been detected, of which 69% correspond to people who live in the State of Mexico, Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca.1

The groups at greatest risk of contracting these diseases are children, the elderly and pregnant women, and the symptoms they may present include fever, headache, tiredness, skin rashes and muscle aches, and could even result in the person being disabled for seven days for Zika and/or Dengue or for up to six months for Chikungunya.2 [1]

It is for the above that, to protect your family against these diseases, the SC Johnson Family Health Insect Science Institute recommends the following actions you can take to prevent mosquitoes from breeding or biting those you love most:

Eliminate standing water

Did you know that a mosquito only needs a teaspoon of water to lay its eggs? Your flower pots, birdbaths, or even a bottle cap can all be breeding grounds. Check that there are no accumulations of water anywhere.

Create barriers against mosquitoes

Clothing is the first line of defense. Wear light pants and a long-sleeved shirt or any garment that covers your body. Now, when you and your family are at home, make sure the mosquitoes can't get in. Keep doors and windows closed if possible or adapt mosquito nets to ventilate safely. You can also use Raid® brand insecticides such as Raid® Home and Garden Spray that protects your family instantly, or Raid® Liquid Repellent to repel mosquitoes from outside rooms and kill those that have already entered.

Protect yourself during your sports activities

When you exercise, you can attract more mosquitoes because of the carbon dioxide you exhale, your body heat, and lactic acid. Wear long-sleeved sports clothing and avoid exercising in areas where there are high concentrations of mosquitoes, such as forests or humid places with stagnant water, or apply repellent 30 minutes before your exercise on exposed skin areas such as arms, face or legs.

If you don't have repellents on hand, use your food from your kitchen to prepare a natural repellent as cloves or the use of plants such as citronella.
