Xoconostle is a fruit with a high nutritional content
The saying goes that there is nothing more Mexican than the cactus, this may refer to the fact that the country is the cradle of this incredible food.
But cacti (a genus of plants to which cacti and nopales belong) offer more fruits with great nutritional powers, such as xoconostle.
“Tuna acida” is the meaning of the Nahuatl word xoconostle, and it grows in arid ecosystems with very little water. Unlike the common tunas, the xoconostle is characterized by its edible peel up to one centimeter thick and by its acid flavor.
It is one of the typical dishes of the area of the valley of the mezquital, of the state of Hidalgo; where also other typical dishes find their origin in their indigenous roots. There are more than 15 varieties of this fruit, the green one is called cuaresmeño, the reddish one is known as rose of castile and the red xoconostle is called bull's blood.
It is famous for its different medicinal and nutritional uses, rich in fiber and vitamins A, C and K; calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and copper. This fiber is one of the characteristics that makes it so beneficial for the digestive system.
Recently, the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP) began research on this derivative of the cactus to know its impact on type 2 diabetes. The project is still ongoing where its hypoglycemic effect is analyzed.
The consumption of Opuntia Joconostle can be done as a condiment for many dishes or in smoothies and juices, as well as finding jellies, jams, pies, cookies, liqueurs and sweets where the main ingredient is this soft and edible tuna, slightly acidic.
