5 Tips for a Low Environmental Impact Inn

Written by:

Discover how to reduce the ecological impact of inns in Mexico. From replacing disposables to recycling paper, there are many practical actions you can take. Find out more here!

The posadas are just around the corner and their impact on the environment is remarkable.

In Mexico, they begin on December 16 and end on December 24. They are a reason for reunion, celebration and contact with the family, however, they also represent a high ecological impact as they go hand in hand with the use of single-use plastics, Styrofoam, the lack of separation of garbage, as well as the excess and waste of food. In addition to this, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) details that each inhabitant generates 1.2 kilograms a day and that on those dates it can reach up to 4 kilograms.

There are certain simple and practical actions that can reverse this impact that we will list below:

  1.   Replace disposables

Currently there are new materials, such as biodegradable disposables, ecological packaging made of cardboard, paper and recyclable materials, as well as the old and forgotten glass. Everyone can hold your food and drink, hot and cold. And best of all, you can use them in other celebrations.

  1.   Invite your contacts digitally

Although it is now rare for printed invitations to be sent for an inn, it does happen. Technological advancement allows us to communicate in various ways that imply not only economic but ecological savings, so invite your contacts through social networks, email or personally!

  1.   Make piñatas with recyclable materials

It can be an activity that encourages family integration. Make the piñatas with reuse materials that you have at home such as newspaper, cardboard, paper that can easily be painted, and for the paste you only need water, salt and flour. In the same way, choose to fill it with fruit instead of sweets, since these, in addition to having chemicals in their ingredients (in many cases), generate a large amount of garbage due to their packaging. A fruit is inexpensive, fresh, and has natural packaging.

  1.   Put different trash cans in order to separate the waste.

Many times at the party everything is thrown in a bag or available boat, and even many times on the floor, that is why we suggest that you locate different differentiated garbage bins and marked where your guests can separate their waste. In addition to throwing away their waste, they contribute to recycling.

  1.   Print the songs and litanies on recycled paper

Use the sheets that can no longer be used for school or professional purposes, or that have a defect to print on them. The best recommendation is to avoid printing. You can download and share them on your cell phone and get together to sing them as a group.

These tips will allow you to enjoy this celebration without neglecting the environment. Small actions allow us to reduce our environmental footprint and the negative impact on the planet.

Remember that fireworks are not only dangerous but they are extremely air pollutants. While the light show seems mind-blowing and captivating, and mesmerizing; the smoke from the sparklers is not.

Things last as long as we take care of them, as you take care of your family, take care of your planet.
